Go on your own bar hopping tour and experience the many faces of Casco.

Eat Fried Fish At Sabores del Chorrillo

I’m reaching with this one, as it’s not in Casco Viejo. But it’s pretty close. Of course, you can find some fried fish and patacones in Casco, but for extra authenticity, visit Sabores del Chorrillo to get yours.

Back in the day, the best fried fish in the city you would find in El Chorrillo neighborhood. This, however, is not a particularly safe area.

Right by the end of the Cinta Costera, 11 seafood locales now stand. Their cooks are the native Chorrillo men and women who historically have dedicated their lives to preparing and selling authentic Panamanian food. You can walk from Casco Viejo and enjoy the Cinta Costera trail right by the ocean before immersing yourself in the fantastic flavors of their cooking.

Note: For photo credit, removal, or updating please contact us at hello@thetropicalista.com

The post Best Things To Do In Casco Viejo appeared first on The Tropicalista.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1520</post-id>

Best Rooftop Bars In Casco Viejo, Panama

Mónica Linares

Casco Viejo

Destinations

Panama City

bars

Rooftop Bars

Casco Viejo is known for its incredible nightlife scene. And Compadre’s drink menu has everything you need to have a good night out.

For more information or reservations for Compadre Barber’s Club visit compadre.online

Note: For photo credit, removal, or updating please contact us at hello@thetropicalista.com

The post Best Rooftop Bars In Casco Viejo, Panama appeared first on The Tropicalista.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1481</post-id>

Weirdly Awesome Things To Do In Panama City

Mónica Linares

Panama City

Travel Guides

Casco Viejo

travel tips

There are many awesome things to do in Panama City, Panama. This country is surrounded by water, so it’s no surprise that water sports abound.

You don’t have to go that far to be able to enjoy a good paddle boarding session. Stand Up Panama is located in the Amador Causeway, where anyone can take paddle boarding lessons, both beginners and experienced paddlers.

You can even request a group class if there are more than 4 people. And the younger members of the family don’t have to stay behind. Kids classes are available if they are between 10 and 15 years old.

Besides teaching you basic techniques, you’ll get your own guided tour through Panamanian waters. Suit up and don’t miss this unique experience.

Listen To Live Jazz Music

Casco Viejo is renowned for its nightlife. People might usually suggest going to the best party bar or club. But if you’re looking for a different scene… live jazz music might do the trick.

Danilo Perez is a Grammy-winning Panamanian jazz pianist and composer with his own Jazz club here in Panama City. His dream come to life is the Danilo’s Jazz Club right by the American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo, Panama.

This club hosts both local and international artists… a lot trained by Danilo himself.

Even if you’re not an avid jazz listener, this place will welcome you with its classy atmosphere and great food and drink options. Maybe you’ll come out a fan.

Cycling and Skating In The Amador Causeway

The Amador Causeway connects the continental part of Panama City with an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. This is an excellent family spot to take a stroll, bike, skate, jog, and grab a bite to eat.

This is one of the popular spots in the city where you have views of the city skyline on one side, and on the other to the entrance of the Panama Canal and the Puente de las Americas.

Kiosks to rent bikes and skates are available, for about $5 to $15 per hour depending on the type of bike you decide on.

We recommend renting from Burke Bikes in Amador for their affordable prices and wide variety of bikes and equipment.

While You’re There Visit The Biomuseo

While at the Causeway, you can’t miss The Biodiversity Museum. The formation of the Isthmus of Panama impacted enormously the ecology of the Western Hemisphere and changed the Earth’s biodiversity forever. The Biomuseo tells you this unique story.

Born from the work of renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo was first designed in 1999 and came to life 15 years later.

Learn about Panama’s natural and cultural history in this immersive experience.

Have Drinks In A Skyscraper Rooftop

The nightlife scene is not only present in Casco Viejo, but spreads throughout the whole city.

Panama has some of the tallest skyscrapers in Latin America, and in some of those, the rooftops are transformed into modern and elegant bars. In these you can get the feeling of a luxurious life complete with a 360° view of the city.

Some honorable mentions go to BITS or Bar In The Sky, the rooftop bar on the 62nd floor of the Hard Rock Hotel… and Panaviera’s 66th-floor rooftop bar.

Try The Most Expensive Coffee In The World

The Geisha is a premium coffee bean that originated in Ethiopia. Panama, however, is currently the epicenter of the Geisha beans.

In May 2019, a record-breaking bid was placed on the Lamastus Family Estates Geisha coffee for $1,029 a pound.

In places like San Francisco, California, you can get a cup of this specialty coffee for $75 a cup. In Tokyo, Japan, for about $140 a cup.

But right at the source… you can get yours for $9 a cup in the Bajareque Coffee Bar in Casco Viejo.

If having the most expensive coffee is out of your budget, like for us mortals would be, I strongly recommend visiting Café Unido. They roast their own coffee from Boquete and have a wide range of delicious Panamanian coffee bags for you to take home. Their coffee might not be the most expensive in the world, but it is so good you can surely go home saying it is.

For more information visit their website cafeunido.com

Dive into Panama’s Small Chocolate Culture

If you are a chocolate lover you will not want to miss the experience of eating carefully handmade chocolate at Mosaico Chocolate Café.

Each piece is its own work of art. This 82-kilometer waterway cuts through the Isthmus and connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. I believe that one of the largest and most difficult projects in engineering history is worth a look.

If you do not want to go visit the museum or do a tour, and want an affordable option, you can drive by the Gatun locks. Although this is technically in the Colon side of the canal, you’ll be as close as possible without going through it.

If you do wish to go on a full tour, the Ocean to Ocean tour can pick you up in Panama City and first take you to Gamboa. In here you’ll enjoy an eco-adventure where they’ll take you to the Monkey Islands. At the Agua Clara Visitor Center, the newly expanded canal can be appreciated. Tours like this can go for about $140

Note: For photo credit, removal, or updating please contact us at hello@thetropicalista.com

The post Weirdly Awesome Things To Do In Panama City appeared first on The Tropicalista.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1538</post-id>

Best Restaurants in Casco Viejo, Panama

Mónica Linares

Casco Viejo

Destinations

Panama City

Restaurants

Panama’s gastronomy scene is ever-changing and globally influenced. It is absolutely the perfect contrast of old and new, local and foreign, traditional and modern!

This charming old walled city hosts churches, pedestrian walkways, historical plazas, and palaces. Making Casco Viejo a must-see.

It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997 and it consists of 16th and 17th century Spanish Colonial architecture.

Travel to Casco Viejo: Planning your visit

If you are traveling to Panama for a few days, I’d recommend planning beforehand to get the most out of your trip. Of course, a spontaneous trip to Casco Viejo will be still unforgettable.

What I mean to say is that you could find lots of history, nightlife, gastronomy and never end! You could spend a whole day visiting historical sites. Yet, you could miss having an authentic Panamanian experience.

This colonial-era city has an interesting history that dates back to the 1600s. But today, Casco Viejo is Panama City’s melting pot, with the perfect mix of old and new.

Without a doubt, if you are fond of historical sites, prefer to sip a cup of world-class coffee or a party animal. I’m sure you will fall in love with Casco Viejo!

That’s why we want to give you an in-depth guide to Casco Viejo.

What’s the best way to get around Casco Viejo?

The best way is to explore Casco Viejo completely on foot.

Best time to travel to casco viejo

You can visit year-round, although December to April (dry season) is definitely the best!

Check out Casco Viejo’s touristic website. Panama’s most charismatic neighborhood has its own website.

There you can find anything from news and information about anything you want to see there.

How to get to Casco Viejo

Take a taxi or Uber to Casco Viejo.

Luckily, taxis in Panamá do not have meters. On the other hand, our suggestion is to tell first where you are heading and agree on the price before starting the journey.

Take a metro bus or metro to Casco Viejo

In Panama, we use cards for public transportation. You can get them at any metro station.

At this time, you have two options either the metro or a bus to Casco Viejo.

If using the metro: Take the metro to 5 de Mayo Station. From there, the Cinta Costera, Fish Market, and Casco Viejo are all within 15 minutes of walking distance.

If using Metro Bus: Hop in the “Panama Viejo-Via Israel-Mariscos” bus from Albrook Terminal, Avenida Balboa, or Via Israel. Get off at the Cinta Costera stop near the Fish Market.

What you need to know…

A quick guide to Casco Viejo for you to take care of the smaller details.

Make sure you are prepared to walk, as it is better to explore Casco Viejo by foot.

It’s illegal to drink on the streets.

Tipping in Panama is not exactly mandatory. Even so, they will make you feel like it is. Generally, the minimum is 10% of the total bill.

Dress Policy. Well, there are some places that will rather prefer closed shoes and shirts for men for uptight restaurants, lounges, and clubs. In more laid back places, there is not a really strict dress code. I would suggest not dressing too messy.

Casco Viejo has very small alleys and parking around is not really the best option. Some are paid and others unpaid.

For this reason, I would suggest parking in the building close to Plaza Herrera, which is free. (Pro tip: If you get there before 9 o’clock out of payday you will be able to find a spot on the free parking lots).

Further along, there are the parking lots located outside Casco Viejo which are also free. There are at the very end of the Cinta Costera/beginning of Casco Viejo at your left.

I love high heels but to have a better experience wear thick heels, sneakers, or any other type of low-heeled, closed shoes. Wedges and flops are okay, but would not recommend it either!

If you’ve been in any other old town in the world, you know what am I talking about! Cobblestones are no joke!

Your Guide to Casco Viejo: Safety Tips

Casco Viejo is pretty safe. Even so, our guide to Casco Viejo can’t miss this.

There are policemen all over the place. However, we should understand they are not ‘big brother’ and can’t see it all! So we will give you some safety tips to enjoy yourself in Casco Viejo during the night and daytime!

Keep yourself within the safe limits. Most importantly, during the night. El Chorrillo, Santa Ana, and Calidonia places you should stay away from. (Pro tip: If you are staying outside Casco Viejo, we recommend taking a taxi or Uber to get back to your hotel).

Your rule of thumb is: Usually unsafe alleys are not well lit and they look worn out and/or dirty.
